Why is the water supply ridiculously noisy when my neighbour uses their washing machine?

New tenants moved in next door earlier this year. Fairly soon on, I noticed how noisy the water supply was, when they used their washing machine. Imagine the 'water fill noise of the water rushing through the cold mains supply if you are standing next to your washing machine - now imagine this level and type of noise being audible from the party wall, in every room of the house! (Neighbour hears it in their house, too.)

I have spoken to them a few times, they did have problems with the shower and hot water early on, which meant they had a plumber out.

Suggestions so far, are that their water pressure is too high - could have been wrongly adjusted when the plumber came out but then why doesn't the noise happen with all mains feed, e.g. taps? OR that a stopcock or valve somewhere isn't fully open so the water is forcing itself through and this echoes through the whole system.

Both these two make sense but I can't understand why it only happens with their washing machine. Could it be the way it's plumbed in or just a pants washing machine?

All helpful suggestions gratefully received, will be phoning their letting agent once I have a better idea of how to explain the problem. Why is the water supply ridiculously noisy when my neighbour uses their washing machine?
Have them check the wash machine hose connection inlet screens.

They may be restricted causing the noise. Why is the water supply ridiculously noisy when my neighbour uses their washing machine?
I think the problem lies in the hot %26amp; cold water feeds to the washing machine. If their Plumber has fitted isolation valves to the machine, and they are not turned fully on they are very noisy. Try turning them fully on and I think this may solve your problem. Good Luck!
Are the pipes secured to the wall with clips? If not it may be the pressure of the water making the pipes move. Or maybe they need to turn the pressure down?

Can a flood safe washer supply hose cause a new washing machine to stop prior to final rinse?

I recently purchased a new washer (Frigidaire) and have had the problem of the machine stopping just prior to final rinse every time. I've had 3 repairmen try to fix it, first the control board then the door latch. The last one said that the flood safe hose isn't allowing enough water to send the machine into its next cycle. Is this possible and will changing the hose to a standard supply hose work? Also , do they make an 8' supply line , my washer is 6+' from the valves?

ThanksCan a flood safe washer supply hose cause a new washing machine to stop prior to final rinse?
My thoughts would be that this has nothing to do with your washer not working like it should. All of the flood safe hoses I have seen are completely separate from the washer. If you had the valves off to the water and tried to use your washer it would still try and fill up because it does not know when the water is on or not. Sounds to me like they are using that for an excuse because they do not know how to fix your problem. They do make long hoses, this is a 10 foot one: http://www.appliancerepair.homedepot.com鈥?/a>

But I do not think this is the problem. Good luck...Can a flood safe washer supply hose cause a new washing machine to stop prior to final rinse?
I bought the Flow safe stainless steel washing machine hoses but I'm taking them back. I connected them today and they have cause nothing but trouble and concern. Didn't work properly even after several times of repeating the re-set proceedures. Don't buy, They're a pain in the a**. Report Abuse

new washers use atc, automatic temperature control, to regulate how much of which temp water to comply with government regulations. what is happening is the ';flood-safe'; hose will shut down as it is designed, the hose has a safety type valve built into one end to stop any mass amounts of water from ';flooding'; your home and then no water will enter the unit causing the washer to fail and not run. it is the hose. try a new, different type of hose and that will fix the problem.

also you want to be sure the longer, metal end of the hose is one the faucet, not on the washer.

  • Washing machine supply pipe?

I would like to move my washing machine about 3 metres from where it is I have a hot supply pipe coming through the wall from kitchen and I also have a cold supply on a turn off/on tap in the room is there a simple way to make the pipes longer as i have only seen 2.5 metre supply pipes. If not which parts do i need to extend them. Tanks in advance am hoping to do it today so a quick reply would be useful. ;-)Washing machine supply pipe?
hose extentions you can get these from b%26amp;q.Washing machine supply pipe?
If your cold water tap is closer, you could connect the cold water supply to your hot %26amp; cold inlets with a Y piece. All new washing machines only have a cold fill inlet now as it is more efficient for the washing machine to heat the water than pulling hot water from your boiler.By the time your boiler has recognised the demand from the washing machine and heated the water, the washing machine is already 1/2 full with cold water that was sat in the pipe work. Depends how old your washer is
You use a flexible pipe or hose to connect and extend your supply pipe.
    hose extensions
Buy longer hoses or adapters to add on to the ones that you have instead of plumbing.
    Pipe stretcher.
Extend the hard plumbed water pipes to bring the on/off valve closer to where you need the machine then use standard hoses.

Is it safe to connect the washing machine's earth wire to the house's water supply pipes?

NO! I know that water pipes are commonly used as grounding points, but is it not advised and against electrical codes. If it shorts out to ground, It will send 120 volts to your water pipes. This is VERY dangerous. Touch a charged pipe while you are standing in water (repairing a leaking pipe, for instance) and you have washed your last load of laundry....... DO NOT listen to JEREMY!!!!Is it safe to connect the washing machine's earth wire to the house's water supply pipes?
jd has a point, and why would you do such a thing? is it because your washing machine has three prongs and the plug you are trying to connect to only has slots for two?, if that's the case you're best bet would be to get a gfi plug or having wire run from the panel that includes a hot(black wire) a neutral(white wire) and a ground (usually just bare copper) all the way to the laundry room, however i do believe that you would still need to install a gfi plug or breaker due to the fact that the plug would be 6 ft near water....Is it safe to connect the washing machine's earth wire to the house's water supply pipes?
    No, it downright bloody dangerous.

And since you use the words ';Earth Wire'; you aren't USA-based, ergo, you have a uk 3-pin plug.

What's wrong with the earth at the socket?
Not only no but HECK no.
Yes, as long as they're copper... and as long as you're sure that's the earth (ground) wire you're connecting.

What component should be checked first if a washing machine does'nt fill-up with water and water supply is on?

what component should be checked first if a washing machine does not fill-up with water and water supply is on?What component should be checked first if a washing machine does'nt fill-up with water and water supply is on?
Shut the water off at the supply hoses and then take off the hoses at the washing machine. Check to see if the screens on the inlet of the water valve are plugged. If not its the valve its self. What component should be checked first if a washing machine does'nt fill-up with water and water supply is on?
The problem is probably the water valve or timer. But the way your question is worded (';what component should be checked first...';) would be answered by saying to check the power cord to make sure it's plugged in and getting power. If not, the timer won't work and the valve won't open. But that's such an obvious thing to check that I assume you're beyond that point, so the problem is probably the valve(s) and/or timer.
This is way too easy of a question.

    THE WATER VALVE AND TIMER
Replace the timer on the knob. It's not working.
see if you have a switch that is for small / large loads
first would be power outlet make sure your even getting power to the unit, second would be putting an ohms meter on to the valve and check to see if its getting 120 volts if it is and not filling boom its your valve, if its not getting power check the water level switch for voltage, if it has voltage on the right leads it could be that, the wiring diagram is also with the unit so use that as a reference any other questions feel free to ask.

Is it safe to run a washing machine while the electric supply is from an extension lead?

There might be building and safety codes that prohibit this. The reason such codes exist is that extension cords are often too long or made of too small of wire. If your extension is no longer than needed to reach the receptacle and made of heavy enough wire it should be safe. It is also important to ensure that each plug connection makes a snug contact. Anything that causes too much resistance, long wire runs, insufficient wire size and poor connections create heat. Over time the heat can melt or harden the insulation, wear down the components in the appliance or, in extreme cases cause a fire.

If your appliances are covered by warranty you should check with the manufacturer. Some manufacturers may void the void the warranty if an extension is used.Is it safe to run a washing machine while the electric supply is from an extension lead?
The one very important stipulation that has not been mentioned here, is that the coiled extension lead, MUST be fully unwound from the reel.

A coiled lead generates heat, and heat causes fires. Is it safe to run a washing machine while the electric supply is from an extension lead?
Yes provided it's 13 amp rated cable and correctly wired.
Yes as long as its at least a 14 gage wire in the cord and plugged to a ground fault receptacle.

    t
yes if your extension is of a heavy gauge ask your local hardware store
I hope so, my washing machines been running from an extension lead for about 8 years!!! lol x

BB UK: Random question-Why do they never supply the house with a washing machine?

Is it me or has there ever been a washing machine in any of the BB series? I've never seen one and the housemates always seem to wash their clothes in the bath. Why don't they provide them with one?BB UK: Random question-Why do they never supply the house with a washing machine?
I remember in one of the BB's their washing was done for them, they had their dirty laundry and it came back. I don't know why they have never had a washing machine though. I've never noticed one. Probably because it was cause too many arguments with everyone trying to use the washing machine. I honestly don't know?

My Hot water supply faucet is leaking from the hose connector. If I keep it connected to my washing machine?

the leaking goes to the hose adn finally I guess to the machine. I just realize that is leaking when I disconnected. I am worry if the leaking is going to damage my machine. I only use it on the weekends. I wonder if the machine keeps receiving water when not in use will it get damaged. Will the machine get rid of it if not in use ?

Please help me. Tell me how bad my machine get damaged. My Hot water supply faucet is leaking from the hose connector. If I keep it connected to my washing machine?
Just shut off the water supply spigot when not in use. It won't hurt the machine, but it might fill it up and overflow if it isn't used for a long time. The machine won't drain unless its running in the Drain Cycle. My Hot water supply faucet is leaking from the hose connector. If I keep it connected to my washing machine?
the hose leaks ,how old if more than 2 yrs old go buy 1 and replace it ,if fairly new replace the rubber washer inside the hose.

  • Plumber recommends placing the hot and cold supply lines about 24'; above the washing mach. WHY?

A kitchen remodeling will include a laundry area. In the plumbing plan, the plumber recommends extending the hot and cold supply lines about 24'; above the connections to the washing machine. Why?Plumber recommends placing the hot and cold supply lines about 24'; above the washing mach. WHY?
it is to eliminate the'; hammering'; effect. the extension Will maintain better water flow and reduce the vibrations caused by ';air locking';Plumber recommends placing the hot and cold supply lines about 24'; above the washing mach. WHY?
Assuming you are using a licensed plumber, I'd trust his judgment. They've seen everything and usually try to set things up to prevent you from having a problem.
i dont see why he recomends 24'' ABOVE machine, usualy they would be at the side of the machine or between the washer and dryer, if thats not possible then some where behind the machine in easy reach for u to be able to turn water off in an emegency
So they are high enough to turn off water incase the hose springs a leak or you need to get to the valves fast. If you have a leak you wouldn't want to fluid your home or garage.
probably to make access easier for when you have to shut the water off. This way you don't have to pull the machine out to do so.

Do we need continous water supply especially from tap for fully automatic washing machine?

Yes because there are several cycle to the washing process. Usually the machine fills and drains and rinses about 4 times during the whole cycle.Do we need continous water supply especially from tap for fully automatic washing machine?
They're designed to work with a certain pressure of water, so it might just cut off and not work if you don't plumb it in (that's if it has a built in safety feature) or just overheat the element and die if it does not have the safety feature.

    Short answer: yes

Do I have to turn off the water supply before I disconnect an automatic washing machine?

No, but water will go everywhere and flood your houseDo I have to turn off the water supply before I disconnect an automatic washing machine?
As people living in freedom, we basically don't HAVE to do anything we don't want to... now, having said that; I would turn off the water at the valves located near the spot the rubber/stainless hoses connect to the household plumbing lines.

If you choose your democratic right to do what you want and decide you do not want to turn the water off; you might want to put a swim suit on first and get lots of towels ready to clean up the mess... Good Luck!Do I have to turn off the water supply before I disconnect an automatic washing machine?
No, just turn off the cocks where the washing machine hoses are attached.
Yes, unless you water all over you floor!
i would just in case, it dont take long to flood a kitchen.
There should be a small valve on the hose connection, turn it off there.
unless you want your kitchen flooded i would suggest you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only if there is no little tap/valve where the flexi hose joins to the house plumbing, if there is, just turn off there. Take care when undoing the hose from pipework, as there will be pressure in the hose, and undo slowly incace the tap didn't turn off fully.
Yes; definitely; or you will have water all over the floor.

Turn off the water, than be sure the drain hoses are emply also.
Not the main water supply. If you pull it out the hot/cold fill pipes have little taps on them. you turn them off, not the main one
pull machine away slightly , follow plastic pipes from the back of the machine , ..where they are attached are little taps , turn off , test , by removing the pipe(unscrew by hand) done ::!!
No, you shpuld find two isolating valves behind or near the washing machine. Just trace the hoses back to find where they are.
yes unless u wont a pond in the kitchen
follow the water pipes from the back of washing machine to the water (copper) water pipe. you should have some small taps there, give them a turn. water is cut off to the machine. replace remove washing machine, just remember to turn water back on :-)
yes, but only at the spigot.
    yes.
there are two valves on the wall behind the machine those are enough to close
Yes, follow the water hoses to your water valves and turn them clockwise to turn them off. Be careful with the hot water side which is usually the the left side. Use a towel over the the connection when unscrewing it after closing off the valves to guard hand against residual hot water.
if the washing machine has taps that it's connected to , and supply it , you have to turn of these taps only , but if it's connected to the water tubes without taps , then you have to turn off the water supply before disconnecting it .
Yes, turn it off at the stopcock behind the machine at the water inlet.
no, you should have two rubber pipe`s coming from the back of your machine one red one blue witch go to your hot and cold water supply, on the pipe`s are two little tap`s turn them to stop the flow of water then unscrew the pipes on newer machines there is only one pipe same process
there will be a tap just before the flexible pipe, turn this off
YES. For safety, turn off at the stopcock.
    yes
    yes
Yes, unless you want water all over the place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes Ideally, And then un-plug the machine but leave a bucket under the taps as when the water supplie is switched back on water will drip through the pips...and you wouldn't want water everywhere...!

How can water supply to the house affect washing machine? Can the contractor hook up washer to sewer water?

Please someone tell me. I lived in Texas and was using a new washer. Everything worked great. I then moved to CA and took washer with me. The washed clothes STUNK like a fungus was in there. I was doing everything the same as in Texas. I ended up moving back to Texas and now using the same washer, everything is perfect again. I also know that the contractor who built the CA house is not so honest. My husband thinks the washer was hooked up to sewer water or something like that. Any ideas? Thank you!How can water supply to the house affect washing machine? Can the contractor hook up washer to sewer water?
Yup that is a possibility. In many states filtered sewage is being used to water lawns/outdoor spigots. It could have been accidentally tapped into. How can water supply to the house affect washing machine? Can the contractor hook up washer to sewer water?
The city in calif you lived in probably had SO2 or sulfur Dioxide in the water, even in small quantities it has a repugnant odor. Other debris in the water storage areas might produce microrganisms that produce bad musty odor in the water, even thought Chlorine is used to kill them off their by products still remain in the water supply.

Calif is not the only state with such water. Wells in South Eastern Michigan have a lot of SO2 in their water and it needs to go thru a purfiying process prior to usage.

As far as hooking to drain sewer, hardly so, because to attain pressure to fill the washer you'd need to be hooked to water supply.
The water is not the same in the U.S. Here, where I live, a lot of people have cisterns. They're homes are built over old coal mines that have filled with water and have simply destroyed the aquifers in the area, the water is salty, tastes like heck, can't wash clothes in it, etc. they haul in there water.

Other areas are built over salt mines, same problem. Homes built over oil and gas lines drilled into the ground. These areas and the way it was done has ruined the aquifers and the people now have to haul in their water.

This is probably what happen to you.
There is no pressure in the waste water line so that wasn't what produced the smell. What the problem might have been is a mystery to me but a plumber in CA would have been able to help.
In California you don't even drink the water that comes out of the tap in most Cities %26amp; you are right the water dose stink in most Cal. cities. I think the reprocess the water, the get the water from ALL kinds of sources like one I know is the Colorado river South of Vegas in a place called Buckskin MTS area but it is pumped right out of the river up over the Buckskin MTS to Cal. %26amp; you should see what gets in the river, retirement homes, Casinos, all kinds of water craft, float planes, house boats, you get the idea.

Smartest thing you did is move back to Texas.

To many people, business, agriculture etc. for this old man.

Did you drink much of the water? did you have problems with infections, bladder?
No, I don't think it would have been connected to waste water of any kind.

Theres something wrong with the warm water supply at home how can i have a shower and wash myself? ?

no access to hot waterTheres something wrong with the warm water supply at home how can i have a shower and wash myself? ?
grab a large pot, fill it with water and heat on stove, dump into bath tub, do this several times then cool down boiling water with cold. then take a bath.Theres something wrong with the warm water supply at home how can i have a shower and wash myself? ?
Heat the water on the stove in a big pot. You could fill the sink or tub. You could ask a friend or neighbor to use their shower until yours is fixed. Good luck, at least you still have water.
    hi there.

just boil water and pour in tub.

after that just add cold water as needed.then ha,ve a warm bath pouring water on body with the help of jug.

I have a washing machine motor with Red Blue White leads .How do i connect a 240volt supply to it for testing?

its a two directional motorI have a washing machine motor with Red Blue White leads .How do i connect a 240volt supply to it for testing?
I didn't think that washing machines use 240 volts. I think you will fry the motor. I would think you would want to test the continuity first, with no power.I have a washing machine motor with Red Blue White leads .How do i connect a 240volt supply to it for testing?
I seriously hope your in the UK because residential washers in the US are 120 volt unless it's a very heavy duty commercial washer. I agree with Don about the wiring or somewhere in the machine there should be a wiring diagram.
Every motor has a label. What does the label say for voltage?

  • Does the mains water supply have to be turned off when disconnecting the washing machine?

I'm getting a new washing machine and having the old one collected, but of course they won't take it unless it's disconnected! What's the best way to do this?Does the mains water supply have to be turned off when disconnecting the washing machine?
not the mains, no. there are valves that will need to be turned off from the hot and cold feeds though (the red and blue hoses at the back). don't worry if you don't have two hoses, i disconnected the hot feed on my machine to conserve energy. Hope that helpsDoes the mains water supply have to be turned off when disconnecting the washing machine?
you should check how your existing machine is being piped. most modern homes have a tap on the pipe intended for the washing machine. just turn that off and you can disconnect the washing machine. some water in the remaining length of the pipe/water tube may flow out but that should be minimal.
just turn the tap off that the hose is connected to, its very simple
HEY...have you been spying on me? Yes you do have to turn the water mains off..unless you want the kitchen full of water.
    no only the valve,s
under the sink you'll find 2 connection, one red one blue, turn these little taps off and undo the pipes
OK turn of the valves to which the red and blue pipes are connected as the others have said above.

DON'T FORGET the waste, there will quite likely be some residual waste water in the pipe and pump. You need to keep the open end of this pipe up above the middle of the washing machine until it is outside OR drain it into a shallow receptacle, the entire length of this pipe needs to be above the open end for it to empty properly and this is made more difficult if the pipe is corrugated.
I think the company your buying the washing machine from should agree to turn off the water by just reaching back of the washing machine and turning the dern water off. There should be a hot and a cold water valve located right behind the washing machine that you just turn off. If it's like mine it also has a plastic drain hose, bigger white hose that the old wash water drains out of the washer, too.

When you know these simple minded people who are delivering the washer are coming, just reach behind the washer and turn the water valves off, remember righty tighty, and then just lift the drain hose, the larger white hose, out of the drain hole and your all ready for the new washer.

I honestly don't understand why the people you bought the washer from can't disconnect and reconnect your washers.

I might check with other stores the next time and ask if they do that. Most do all that and get rid of your old applience too.

    Thanks
There should be shut off valves where the hoses connect to the back of your washer. Just turn them both off, disconnect the hoses, and your on your way. Don't forget to unplug the washer before you mess with the water shut off valves. Congratulations on your new washer. I need one badly.
no you dont have to turn off the mains water supply. you have to turn off the small tap situated behind the washing that connects to the washing machine BTW THEY MAY BE TWO coloured blue and red both require disconnecting and turning to the off position.

turning the taps in your sink will serve no purpose whatsoever so take no notice of that from anther person on here

if you are not sure after reading this get a friend who knows the correct procedure or wait till the delivery men come with the new one it only takes a minute or so to disconnect and reconnect the new one
Good question. When you turn on your washing machine, it will fill up with water. This water pipe is connected to all the pipes in your house (like the sink and hose).

There are 3 pipes connected to your washing machine. Two are water supply hoses and one is the draining pipe that leads to the sewer. (see http://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to-repair-a-washing-machine.html for a diagram)

Connected to the water supply hoses is a water letlet valve that propels the water into your washing machine tub.

This basicly means that the two water supply hoses are always filled with water.

If you don't turn off the main water supply water will just keep pouring out of the hoses.
    sure
No, but you do need to turn off the water spouts the hoses are connected too. Turn them off before you unscrew the hoses
No Shut off the water source to the WM and you will be fine. IE the hot and cold faucets at the wall.
Yes !Make sure you turn off you water.

Usually find the tap under the sink turn off and then try and run some cold water from the tap at the sink just to make sure !
Your inlet tubes one red and one blue will be connected to the hot and cold water pipes. Each of these should have a little tap on that you will need to turn before you disconnect them. Other than that you can leave your mains water on.
you should b able to turn the supply off to the washing machine only, then dissconnect the pipes.
Find the pipes which feed the water into your machine. Each (blue and red) should have a small tap on them which you turn to the off position.

Put a bowl underneath them before disconnecting the machine to catch the remaining water - shouldn't be a lot.

There's no need for the whole water supply to be turned off at the mains. In fact you could make a cup of tea and share it with the people collecting the machine!
Get someone to do it you are clueless.

Can a new washing machine be damaged by a faulty electical supply?

Our brand new Zanussi washing machine broke soon after we had it due to a faulty PCB board. We are now on our third machine and the same has just happenned to it. None of the machines have worked for more than a few washes before going wrong. Is it possible that a fault with the electricity supply is causing this? Surely the fuse should protect against this, and the machine should have a device to protect it against excess current if the fuse fails right??Can a new washing machine be damaged by a faulty electical supply?
Possibly a faulty batch of PCB`sCan a new washing machine be damaged by a faulty electical supply?
Yes. Electronic devices, like those on the PCB, can be damaged by ';spikes';. When an electrical device is switched on, the initial current can be anything up to 8 times normal, albeit for a fraction of a second. A normal BS1363 fuse isn't fast enough to blow in time. As you say, the circuit should be designed to account for this.
if you are using the same wall socket outlet then probably the caused ,get a LEW to tighten the screws inside . ,i just have this bad contact problem with my car jump start pair of cable those black and red i bought few yrs back from one gas station ,.from the look it was solid until my years of experience put me to shame in front of stranger.it should be of atleast 10mm sq in size per cable, instead that dick was using power cord tpye 4 core X 1mmsq twisted and cramped without soldering,i wonder who approved the ah seng beng hell job.
It's cool when it works like that. How old is the house? Are you certain the house electrical system is solidly and properly grounded per code? If you answer old to the first question or not sure to the next, have it inspected at your own cost unless you have a plan with your electric company that covers internal wiring. They usually cost money. You have to eliminate the ground as a suspect first in this situation. Ask around. You could also have a piece of crap machine. Take out the ground question first.
Not all machines are fitted with surge protection. You should contact the manufacturer and ask them. A surge could damage any appliance not fitted with a surge protector.
    Yes And Yes!
3 machines and don't you think it's the power supply?..

Please get a electrician to check the circuit.. also to check and tighten all the mechanical connections and joints...I mean the screws need some tightening and don't forget loose connections causes 'arc' which lead to high current (amp) and this could be the possible reason that you machine break down..

For home theater, how do you fill short dips in power supply, such as when the washing machine starts up?

My understanding is that surge protectors only take out the spikes. I don't see how they can take out the dips. A UPS on the other hand wouldn't kick over to battery power on a small, very short dip, would it?For home theater, how do you fill short dips in power supply, such as when the washing machine starts up?
There are power conditioning devices available at higher end home theater retailers, which should do the trick, but they are not cheap. Are you sure your breaker panel has enough capacity for all of your appliances %26amp; equipment? For home theater, how do you fill short dips in power supply, such as when the washing machine starts up?
mare sure your home theater is on it's won 20 amp dedicated circuit ( 2 would be bad at all and split he components up betwen 2 20 amp dedicated circuits ) will eleminate the problem, if however the recepatacle you use shared the same circuit than the washer then the inrush current needed by the motor wil temp run up the amps ( if you could meter it with a amp probe you'll see spike of 22 - 25 amps for a brief duration, not enough to trip a 20 amp breaker if the duration is short ), so if you got AV runing at the same time you gt a drop in avalible amps and hence the drop as the demand load on a given circuit is more than availbe amps. once the motor starts ( and keep in mind washers do not have capacitors or starters like bigger AC compressors / equiptment will have to alleviate the very same thing you are facing ( but in this case it to prevent nuisance breaker tripping ).

when i wire new home or do remodels, i provide 20 dedicated 20 amp circuits ( no shared nuetral ) all the way back to the panel, along with cat3, cat5, and of course AV input/ outputs to the home theater area ( usally stubbing up 2 1 1/2'; conduits for future or 1 1/2'; pus 1 2'; for those hdmi calble. of course this works on attic accsescable areas
Ive heard of apower strip that has a cap built in, it is designed for DLP and LCD tvs so their light source isnt cut off instantly in a power outage try circuit city or best buy

but you should have the electrical checked there shouldnt be a drop unless a wire some where is too thin causing it to dip
you would need a power capacitator. they are definately made for cars, and I am pretty sure homes as well. It stores constant supplies power so when something else goes on it won't effect your power supply.

Help with plumbing in a washing Machine - connecting to power supply.?

Ive just moved into a new house and have a new washing machine. I normally am really good with things like this but my new house has a wall plug socket for the washing machine with no holes in it to insert the plug. It is one of those new ones where you have to remove the front of the box on the wall and wire the appliance straight in with no plug.

Im not 100% on how you do this - can anyone help please?Help with plumbing in a washing Machine - connecting to power supply.?
Remove the blanking plate on the front and fit a face for a three pin plug. Wire you machine to the plug and connect it to the new socket. All kitchen appliances must be able to be disconnected from mains electric.Help with plumbing in a washing Machine - connecting to power supply.?
Yes it better to install a outlet in place of the blank cover. Always turn off power. On the back of the outlet you will notice one side is silver looking and the other is brass looking. The black wire goes to the brass looking side and the white goes to the silver looking. put outlet in box put outlet cover on. Turn on power plug unit in and get washing. Good Luck!!
Don't - get an electrician to do it for you, or buy an extension lead and plug it into a regular socket.

If neither is an option, you could try the local library; borrow a DIY manual and see if you can follow the instructions.

I'm a fairly competent DIYer, but I'd never touch electrical without a comprehensive set of instructions and diagrams...
change the blank for a proper socket it will be easier to disconnect if anything should go wrong with the washer and you need to move the washer to get behind for anything
Sounds like a hard wire (no plug), turn ya power off, wack front off, wire it tightly, don't need an electrician if your confident.
You need to install a receptacle in the box. Electric code requires a service disconnecting means for appliances.
strange/// i would go get a plug and cover and install it where the blank cover is
all you have is a flex connector, that is because somewhere in your kitchen will be a switch to control your washing machine point, this will have the fuse in it so that when the machine is installed and if a fuse blows, the service engineer doesnt have to pull the machine out to safely isolate it or change the fuse.Switch fuseboard off at main switch, remove cover from point, cut plug off washing machine flex, strip back outer sheath to reveal brown, blue and green/yellow.if your house is a new build the colours in the point should correspond to the colours of the flex, brown to brown, blue to blue,g/y to g/y..or alternatively, brown of flex goes to terminal marked L,blue goes to terminal marked N,and green/yellow goes to terminal marked E.make sure connections are nice and tight ,but dont overtighten.

Can I connect a hot and cold water supply to a cold fill washing machine using y connector?

Would this cause any damage to the machine? Can I connect a hot and cold water supply to a cold fill washing machine using y connector?
Can't see why you would want to do this, as your machine heats the water. You could just connect the hot hose,so that the machine has less to do. Only drawback is that the machine uses cold water to rinse.

You should be able to get a blank end as a replacement for the hot tap.Can I connect a hot and cold water supply to a cold fill washing machine using y connector?
A cold fill machine requires cold water ONLY, if you connect to a ';y '; you will short-circuit the water supply in your house, and cold water will force its way back to the storage tank in the loft and cause a permanent overflow.and NO hot water ever again !!!!!!! DON'T TRY IT

As far as the machine is concerned, feed with COLD only.

Use pliers to turn off the hot tap adjacent to the machine, if successful it should'nt leak. if unsuccessful employ a plumber to fit a new tap that does'nt leak.

Paul R has got it wrong., read what I have just said

LATER ';Y '; pieces were introduced so that a hot/cold machine could be connected to a cold supply ONLY without having to run a special hot to the machine.
clue is in your question...cold fill washing machine!!! don't mess with it.
it will not harm the machiene, but it does need just cold water for rinse.

so just connect the cold only!
Connect the cold and get a stop end for the hot, if you need it.
no it would not damage the machine as i have one on mine as well and every thing is prefect.
I can only suggest a holistic approach - you are going to have to work the thing so fix the tap at the same time. It will not damage the machine - but in these days of costs of heating - it may come back to bite you in the future. Replacing a tap is very easy - so as they say - just do it.

  • Have just got new washing machine and dishwasher but the washing machine has no water supply ?

We have a double adaptor going from the cold water supply to the dishwasher and washing machine all the connections are tight and secure. The dishwasher is fine but the washing machine has no water going into it. How can we get them both to work?Have just got new washing machine and dishwasher but the washing machine has no water supply ?
Just try and connect the washing machine seperately first and see if it works that way as you may need to have them connected individually.

Get a bucket and some towels then you can disconnect it, I would defo try it before calling someone.Have just got new washing machine and dishwasher but the washing machine has no water supply ?
Make certain that the cold water inlet is the one going to the cold water tap. Is the timer or start switch set correctly? has the water level switch been set or reset? What type of washer is it any way? is it a top or front loader.
You need to contact a plumber to find and solve the problem.

My boyfriend works in a beauty supply store, and he said his boss says you can wash you hair with hand soap?

And that it will come out just as clean as if you were using shampooMy boyfriend works in a beauty supply store, and he said his boss says you can wash you hair with hand soap?
probablyMy boyfriend works in a beauty supply store, and he said his boss says you can wash you hair with hand soap?
I wouldn't advise it. Yes your hair will be clean, shine, even, but it will look greasy, and feel dirty. Soap is not the same as shampoo. Soft soap has the same additives as regular soap, with additives with shampoo, and its more expensive that either. So, you hair wont be as greasy feeling and looking, as if you used regular soap, and not as clean feeling, and looking, as if you used shampoo. Stick with Shampoo, and for the ';wet look';, use hair gel.
my hairdresser does the same thing with dish soap. I think eww. but hey, whatevers cleaver
it may be clean, but dry!! handsoap is not healthy for your hair at all.
It will be clean, but it will also be dry so you would definately want to use a conditioner.

You could probably also use detergent but really, neither are good ideas.
Why don't you break up with him and go out with me...........I'm free Saturday night!
That is true. When i'm having a bad hair week and I use gel I wash my hair with Palmolive (dish washing liquid) and it works great.
That is correct: Soap is a detergent, Shampoo is a liquid Detergent. Detergents do not clean, Water cleans.

Detergents merely serve to eliminate the surface tension of the water. That allows the water to clean things. Otherwise the water can not touch anything, because of that Surface tension. If you would like to demonstrate the surface tension of water.

Fill a glass with water and carefully drop a needle on top of the water, make sure the needle is parallel to the surface of the water so it will not pierce the surface tension and the needle will float on top of the water. Cool Huh!
but you need a good conditioner because hand soap is not gentle on your hair.
that is a good idea if your hair is really oily. but soap strips all of the naural oils out of your hair leaving it dry and nasty feeling
I knew a girl in high school who always insisted on using Tide detergent to wash her hair. It looked shiny and good. So, you never know. You could try it, just for a day, if you had another product you are already happy with. Then compare the two.
UNTRUE. I tried this once when I was out of shampoo.

What a holy mess. Your hair feels gummy, flat, brittle and refuses to take any style. Ugh.
I have washed my hair with soap lots of times. I usually use a conditioner afterward though, because it will be really dry for a while.
He is right about that. Many Europeans still use hand soap to wash their hair.
It would be good and clean but extremly dry! I woul djust use regular shampoo and conditioner.
Technically you can and it would clean it just fine. But it would probably overly wash it. The soap would have nothing added for moisture and would dry out your hair if used regularly.
Your boyfriends boss is an idiot!

It may be fine for boys who have really short hair that never tangles and is cut so often you wouldn't know if it was split, but if your hair is more than half an inch long this is a really bad idea.

There are however, hair soaps. These are tricky, because they actually don't contain any soap. It's just because they are a solid shampoo and look like a bar of soap that they get that name.

Do I need a check valve on the cold water supply to my washing machine ?

I have a washing machine connected to the cold water supply and I have noticed that there is no check (non return) valve installed. Do I need this or is it just a precaution. Also, does the supply to the outside tap need one too?

Many thanksDo I need a check valve on the cold water supply to my washing machine ?
Yes you do. No it's not a precaution %26amp; yes you do!!Do I need a check valve on the cold water supply to my washing machine ?
Under Water Company Bylaws in the UK you should fit a double check valve on both the washing machine cold connection and also on the outside tap. These are readily obtainable and are also available as a combined double check valve and hose union bib tap for outside. The outside tap should also be provided with an internal stop valve and draincock to prevent the tap freezing in the winter. Any other connections to the mains water where contaminated water could be drawn into the drinking water system should also be provided with a double check valve.
the water regulations state that washing machines, if they are approved as in the water materials and fittings directory, are already fitted with backflow prevention ie a check valve so NO one is not needed

garden taps fitted before 1999 can be fitted with a double check vale inside the house, or use a tap that has a double check valve incorporated into it, or use a hose union backflow prventer (type HA) or a double check valve after the tap outlet.

a new install needs an isolator and double check valve inside the house other stuff to consider as well
If a check valve is used at all would be on incoming main water supply line and used to prevent the water from being sucked from water heater in the event of a loss of water from system to prevent damage to electric water heaters and draining the inside pipes. Up to you but 1 at entry is all that is needed.
I've never heard of the check valve saving the day; but having said that - I have one on mine. I view it like a safety belt - you may never need it - but if its called for once in a lifetime, it's earned its keep.
outside does and it is good practice for the washing machine to be controled by the appropriate washing machine tap . do you mean non return valve or tap or gate valve .
washer doesn't need one, but I think the outside tap's covered by water byelaws %26amp; must have one.
    washer no

    outside good idea
You don't need one on either, I never bother with mine, they are a waste of time.
Not normally needed. They are only necesssary where there is risk of contamination of the water supply from the hot water supply or from foul water, eg bidet. That said it doesn't hurt especially if there is any risk of back siphonage on the waste side. Most outside tap installations I have seen don't have them. But you should have a shut off valve (remember to drain off when you use it) to stop the valve and pipework outside freezing in winter.
Doesn't NEED either. However some people have them for peace of mind.

Do you stay faithful even if it takes your whole life. Or do you move on even if you get rescued tomorrow, because there is no way you will be able to keep your hands of the celebrity. You know that if you do something, you will loss your partner forever, but you also know that you may never see your home again. What do you decide to do, and how long does it take you to decide? I like to think I would be faithful. I would be more worried about finding food and shelter and ways to be rescued. I guess if it had been a real long time then I might start feeling like giving up and giving into temptation but I don't really know for sure. I could see one thing leading to another while comforting each other and after getting to know each other and spending so much time together etc...

I'm a Capricorn and i'd stay faithful. I always feel bad for the littlest things as long as it's somehow linked to hurting my significant other. (Scorpio). I might think about it for awhile but i know that it's wrong and i'll only be friends with that celebrity.

How often should a tank for potable water storage/supply be washed?

depends. if you regularly use the water and refill it with clean water, not too often. I live in a motorhome and use a 100 gal. tank for daily water use. every 3rd tank I add one cap full unscented bleach to 100 gallons of water. I have used this tank for 9 1/2 years and it is still clean. If your storage is for emergency use you'll want to change and clean the tank regularly. Plastic tanks are easier to clean than metal tanks and require less frequent attention than metal. Use the taste test. also check into water purifiers at the local RV place. How often should a tank for potable water storage/supply be washed?
If in constant use not to worry. If left for a while put a little chlorine in it over night , flush and good to go.How often should a tank for potable water storage/supply be washed?

My washing machine water supply valve is leaking, can i fix with a washer or do i need to replace whole valve

washing machine water supply valve drips while water is on. dont want it to get worse. do i need to solder a new water supply valve on or can i just buy one with threading and just screw it in. Or can i fix it by repairing the washer inside...?My washing machine water supply valve is leaking, can i fix with a washer or do i need to replace whole valve
First, and foremost, is shut down your water supply. Take an open crescent wrench and just right below the off and on handle there will be a packing nut. See if it needs tightening. If that is not the problem, Don't loosen that one, there is a larger nut right under the first nut. Loosen the second nut counterclockwise. Pull the whole top of the valve out. look underneath it and see if the washer is damaged, worn down or gone. If yes, then that is your problem. If that is not the problem, then you have to replace the valve, whether it is the hot or cold water valve. If the valve threads are on the outside where you can see them the valve is sauldered to the copper pipe. If you can not see the threads, it is a female valve and by turning your crescent wrench counterclockwise you can loosen the whole valve to replace. and no tool but the crescent tool will be needed. If you are meaning the fill valve that is on the washing maching, then you will have to replace the whole fill valve. That is a whole different solution. Try this before replacing the whole box, this is an easy fix in comparason. My washing machine water supply valve is leaking, can i fix with a washer or do i need to replace whole valve
if it leaks by the handle there is a ';packing nut'; that you can give a 1/4 turn and it will probably stop. Don't reef on it though
heart attack is correct but if you do need a new washer it has been my experience that it's easier to just replace the faucet. The problem with replacing the washer is that to do it properly you need to sand smooth the washer seat, they make a tool for this but it's a pain. If you don't smooth the seat then your new washer might work but it might not depending on corrosion.
Depends on where it is leaking. If it it coming from the hose replace the hose. If it comes from inside the washer then there could be numerous places it could be leaking from.

Tonight I am replacing something called the water inlet valve on my washer. It is the part that the water hoses actually connect to. The hot water side is leaking filling the wash tub with water even when the washer is off. The cost was $25 dollars to do it myself.

Turn off the water supply to the washer. Remove the hoses. There is a screen inside the hose connections on the back of the washer. Before hooking back up, run some water through the hoses into a bucket to flush them out.How do we clean out aerator on hot water supply to washing machine?
If nothing else works, try using a shop vac to suck out the hot on the back of the washer.U may have to rigg different size tubing together tto get the desired effect.
it is not an aerator!! an aerator supplies air to the water,, you are looking for a screen that filters debris! its in the connector that the hose goes to..
Shut off the water to the machine. Remove both Hot and cold water hoses and soak the hoses in vinegar.

I need to train good hard workers to do professional quality work in residential compound. Have good squeegees, scrapers, brushes etc. What cleaning fluid recipe? Tell about methods please. Does cleaning windows in the sun cause streaking?Questions for window washing pro: Any professional tips on equipment, methods, supplies?
Keep equipment clean and dry(do not store wet)

Vinegar(earth friendly) and water will clean well(mother earth etc for recipe). Or more money use ammonia or bleach based cleaners. DO NOT MIX

Cleaning windows in sun can cause cracking and/ or spotting.

Non soybean based ink in newspaper(not the color parts) works well to eliminate streaking( i think it is the lead). A single sheet per window(keep it clean).

    1. Spray/flush window to remove grit/debris.

    2. Apply 'cleaner'.

    3. Squeegee(and wipe 'blade' off on clean rag between wipes).

    4. Use sheet of newspaper if streaking.

No it stays on all the time. unless you are going away for awhile then its smart to shut the valves off in case of a leak or a hose breaks.Help asap - water supply to washing machine ... do i have to manually turn on / off each time i wash???
You'd need to manually turn off the water supply. There is no pressure valve that can automatically suppress the water flow. Therefore, you need to keep a close eye to it.
you can leave it turn on unless you are going away for a trip. the machine has a valve that controls the flow of water for washing. when the machine is off, the valve is closed.
    It stays on.
You should be able to leave it on. I do this on mine. When in doubt, consult the owners manual. When really in doubt, check with a plumber.

How do I stop a leak from a new valve that supplies water to my washing machine?

Even after applying pipe thread compound AND tightening everything well, there's still a small drip from the hot water valve where it meets the nipple pipe. How do I stop this? How do I stop a leak from a new valve that supplies water to my washing machine?
There's either another bit of tightening to be done or you've got too much thread tape on the nipple...you shouldn't use more than 3 wraps.

You could go the cheap way like all the other answers that don't care about there car but you will most likely end up putting scratches in to the clear coat. What am I going to need to ensure I wash my car without scratching it?

What are the best name-brand items? What is the best way to hand-wash a new car (black) without scratching it? Checklist of supplies?
Hate to break it to you but the primary ingredient in dirt is silica or sand like dirt. The best part of preparation is the initial rinse. This washes off anything loose, dust, bugs, dirt, sand, and sets you up for fewer scratches then just diving in with the mitt and soap.

I like the ArmorAll car wash soap. It looks blue(ish) and is thick and leaves a very nice finish. DO NOT use dish soap as this strips away the shiny finish and leaves a flat finish. Just slosh the wash mitt in the wash bucket frequently to wash the dirt or dust off the mitt. I use a 5-gallon bucket since they are deeper and this gives you more water and room for the dirt to settle to the bottom and not go back out on the mitt. Wash the bottom or lower half of the car last. Wash the tires and wheels dead last. Use stiff brushes on the tires and a soft brush around the wheels.

When you finally get around to a wax job, like a year from now, I prefer those once a year ';waxes'; like NuFinish (use two coats). They leave a very good barrier between the elements and the paint or clear coat and it's easier to rinse off the dirt before you begin the actual wash.

Otherwise, scratches are inevitable since we live on a dusty and dirty planet. If you leave the car in the garage at least half a day this will limit the exposure to dust or dirt that can settle on it at night time. Especially when there might be dew on the car in the morning as this gives the dust something to stick to.

I do not recommend automatic car washes. They really strip the finish (shine) and you get all the dirt from the other 1,000's of cars that went through before you and dirtied up the brushes. They are good for taking off the logo's and antennas, too.

Good Luck! What is the best way to hand-wash a new car (black) without scratching it? Checklist of supplies?
i have a custom truck with a very valuable paint job and i use the mr.clean car wash system and a very soft and clean wash mitt. The system uses a filtered rinse so you at least don,t have to touch the car to dry it
A little dish soap and water with a soft terry clothe

    Wash in the shade

Use a carnuba soft wax to wax it. Most wax is good. Make sure the wax is designed to be removed AFTER it dries or you will be in a world of hurt.
Mother's products, and Meguire's are two brand names I have had good luck with.

My best advice is to use Turtle Wax car wash solution which leaves a waxy finish. It comes out almost as good as a real wax job without the time and effort of waxing it. I am sure there are other product companies that have the wax finish so I suggest trying one. I too own a black car, and another peice of advice is to buy some terry cloth towels, or microfiber towels, andyhting that soaks up water without leaving lint behind, and drying your car right after you wash it. This will eliminate water stains which show up extremely well on black cars.

Another tip on the car wash solution is to use a regular kind first, then go over it again with the waxy finish wash. In my experience the waxy finish makes it shine at the end, but is not at as good at getting dirt and grime off initially as the regular kind.

Hope this helps. good luck, dont give up on black cars, they are a pain to keep clean, but look so incredible when they are!
use aspoonage and some liquid car wash soap
go buy yourself a new bucket and sponge and leather.(not synthetic)

a good wash and wax liquid.(turtlewax)

    a good wax polish.(turtlewax)

fill bucket with hand hot water adding wash and wax at three quarter so it mixes well.

run out hose and thoroughly hose down car to remove all loose grit, sand etc.

sponge car down with wash and wax using hand pressure. press a bit harder for stubborn bits.

    rinse and leather down.

using two soft cloths(wax on wax off) polish car one panel at a time.

do this on a regular basis and as the wax layers build on the car it will be easy to keep clean and will look new for a long time.

never ever run your car through a carwash as this is the best way to ruin the paintwork.(just look at the cars of those who do)

    drive safe everybody.
well, if my bf was here, i could tell u what to use and what te best chemicals u should and should not use. all i know, a black car is the most beautiful color for a car, but also te hardest to keep clean. my bf spends about 2 to 3 hrs just waxing the damn thing. thats not including washing it, drying it, wiping down the inside, vacumming the inside. scrubbing the tires/rims. omg!!!! so much stuff. im glad im a girl.
def do not run through a machine carwash.. stay out of the sun and gently wash it with worn out bath towels with a small amount od dawn dishsoap. never let the rags touch the ground and alway rinse heavily...

What supplies does it take to build 5-stall barn with a tack, wash, and feed room?

I want it to be a pole barn. I was wondering what type and about how much wood and stuff it needed. What supplies does it take to build 5-stall barn with a tack, wash, and feed room?
Start with some architectural drawings. If you have to get a permit to build, you are going to have to have them anyway. You can get a 'take off' (from the drawings) from a lumber yard to determine what supplies you need. What supplies does it take to build 5-stall barn with a tack, wash, and feed room?
A set of blueprints and a Home Depot should do the trick.

Are there any home supplies that I can use to wash my dogs with?

I don't want to use human shampoo or dish soap...I'm thinking something I can make at home? Are there any home supplies that I can use to wash my dogs with?
You do not want to make/use a home remedy as you don't know if it is healthy or not~ I have a precious little puppy that I have done lots of research-- Use TEARLESS baby shampoo with a little dawn dish detergent if you have a flea problem as Dawn will get rid of fleas, if you are worried about skin drying out-- use Aloe Vera shampoo this will moisturize the skin, not to mention how great the fur will look and it will also smell so goodAre there any home supplies that I can use to wash my dogs with?
The best thing to use on your dog if you dont want to use special dog shampoo. I know a bunch of groomers and they use BABY SHAMPOO. they tell me that it is gentle and moisturizing and that it kills fleas and ticks. they recommend rinsing dog, then shampoo, let sit for 5 minutes, then rinse and dry. that simple.
Dog shampoo exists for a reason and is perfectly safe for dogs. It's not expensive and you can buy it from any decent pet shop.
human shampoo will mess with the dog's skin

dawn soap can be used in emergency

    dog shampoo

orvus shampoo is what i used on my dogs and horses.
    Dawn dish soap. Seriously.
Nope, sorry. Buy dog shampoo - it isn't expensive.

need I go on??Where in San Francisco can I buy car soap and other car wash supplies?
Nothing works better or is gentler on the paint and wax than the cheap generic baby shampoos, not even the most expensive car wash shampoos. Guess what a 15 oz bottle of generic baby shampoo cost at the Dollar Store. Yep! It cost $1. And 5 ounces added to a 3 1/2 gallon pail of warm water will suds it up like crazy, as sudsy as the best car wash shampoos. That is 3 washes for ONE dollar! Do you think you can find a cheap generic brand of baby shampoo in a city the size of San Francisco?Where in San Francisco can I buy car soap and other car wash supplies?
